  • If selected, your audio file contributions will be part of Illuminated Lies, a free public immersive art installation involving projections, sound, and interactive performances, that will debut at the Edinburgh Fringe 2024.

  • If your story is selected, we'll contact you to discuss your preferences. We aim to re-record all selected stories with you or an actor. If you would like us to use your original recording, please make sure your audio is good quality.

  • Try recording your story in a quiet space. If selected, there will be an opportunity to re-record. The most important thing is that you get your story to us by the deadline.

    Recording Tips

    - Use a smartphone (e.g. iPhone 11 or above) or an external microphone for the best sound quality.

    - Find a quiet space to record.

    - Try to eliminate as much background noise as possible, e.g. planes, cars and motorbikes.

    - If you're using your phone, put it on mute and aeroplane mode to avoid interruption.

    - Test your recording; make sure you speak clearly and position your phone at the right distance from your face.

  • Yes. We're looking for a diverse range of stories and styles, so if your story is funny or satirical, we would love to hear from you.

  • Misinformation is any information that turns out to be false. Disinformation is the spread of intentionally misleading information. Fake News is the intentional application and dissemination of disinformation presented as news.

  • Yes. You must know the person firsthand and have their written permission to share their story. Stories you have heard about from a ‘friend of a friend’ are not appropriate.

  • No. We will not pay you to share your story or charge you a submission fee.

    This is a non-ticketed, free event created by the public, for the public.

  • Story Quality: We're looking for honesty, emotion, and impact. Our selection panel considers the overall quality of each story submitted.

    We will examine:
    Illuminating Lies: How will this story illuminate the listener?

    Insight: Does the story offer a unique insight into an experience that could foster understanding in the listener?

    Educational Value: Will the audience come away having learned something new?

    Delivery: Is the storytelling compelling?

  • Illuminated Lies is a public art project, so it will be open to children. Please use your best judgment to portray any adult themes in a family-friendly manner and avoid swearing or explicit descriptions.

  • This project is primarily for an English-speaking audience.

    However, if you strongly believe that telling your story in another language is important, please get in touch to discuss.

  • It is your choice whether or not you would like to be publicly credited for your story.

  • Yes. You can present your story as a narrative, song, poem, train of thought, abstract dream, etc. It’s entirely up to you.

  • Yes. Just please make sure everyone can be heard clearly.

  • Yes, you can be as creative as you like. What matters most to us is hearing your story. We have a sound design team on hand to help re-record selected stories so if sound editing is not your thing, do not worry, we've got you covered.
